Wildflower Portraits
These images are part of our ongoing, 30 year documentary art project: “Beauty and the Beast: Wildflowers and Climate Change.” Our award-winning coffee table book and it's companion, educational traveling exhibit “Beauty and the Beast: California Wildflowers and Climate Change” focus on California's great biodiversity.
All floral portraits are created in the field, using only natural light, with the plant safe and sound in the ground. Our goal is always to protect the plant and show the flower in its best light. We set up our "natural light" studio to carefully control the quality, direction and feeling of the light illuminating the beautiful native species. This time consuming approach often looks like we have taken the wildflower from its home and photographed it under artificial light in an indoor studio.
